Money Money Money the rich man's game.

Part one. Starting to talk about money. Having been in business for many years I don't have a problem talking about money, It's availability how to make it, how to budget with it , how to increase it, how much I have and how much I need. But I am always surprised at how many churches and church leaders I come across who do have a problem talking about money. I know in some countries- like here in the UK   there are some cultural taboos on the subject. There is the taboo of talking about money, it's seen as a private thing and then there is the   taboo of the perception of being wealthy or a rich church goer or leader. The latter I think has more to do with the class system and its legacy here in the UK than anything else. I haven't found or come across this attitude in the United States, though I have to say that some of the extremes of the money grabbing tele-evangelists does sicken me. Thankfully there are some very balanced and well respected Christia...

Part Three Samuel a Leadership Homily.

Be successful in your Leadership. How do we as Christian leaders measure our success when we get old? This is not something that leaders feel comfortable talking about. After all to measure something within the church- such as congregation growth or financial reward, could be seen to be tantamount to pride or arrogance. Or should a measurement of success rather be what people think about us and how they remember the words we have spoken or messages and wisdom we have brought to our churches. But I would ask the question why can't it be both, why can't success be measured by that growth and what we leave behind then is as a result of the our words and wisdom. In this case the first is a measurement of leadership success and the second is a measurement of ministry success. In secular business success is measured through how its leader has grown the business, how much profit is made, what the present value of the stock on the stock exchange is, the number in the wor...

Part 2: Samuel a Leadership Homily.

Being secure in Leadership. One of the many things I come across when talking to leaders is how many of them feel insecure and unsure. I am not talking about their ministry their ability to preach or meet the spiritual needs of people. I am talking about their ability to lead, make decisions, direct staff and chair leadership meetings. Not long ago I was attending a building meeting with a team of leaders. I made a particular suggestion on how practically the church could raise finance and was told categorically by the senior leader that he would not go down that route because God had not shown him to do so. I of course disagreed with him and a hush descended on the meeting no one had ever disagreed with the man especially in the public arena. An apology was demanded by him (not given). It was clear to me that the man was out of his depth in a committee meeting such as this- that was discussing practical things and making concrete decisions on how to build a church build...

Samuel a Leadership Homily

Part One- Being sure of God's call. The other day I was leafing through my Bible taking out the old page markers - the newsletters from churches visited, the old envelopes with notes and telephone numbers hurriedly written on them. When I came across some notes on leadership that I had written on the back fly leaf page I read through them and realised there importance. While I was reading through the notes I saw the similarity between them and the ministry and life of Samuel the prophet. The more I mused on them and the life of the great prophet the more I saw lessons that we as Leaders need to learn. When you   think about Samuel you think Prophet, you don't think Leader. But Samuel was the last of the Judges of Israel 1Samuel 7:6 Tells us that Samuel was leader (Judge) of Israel at Mizpah. I get ahead of myself to understand Samuel's leadership qualities we need to go back to the beginning, his call; Briefly the story is as follows;   Samuel's...
