Someone once said that the greatest act of stupidity is to do the
same thing over and over again getting the same result but hoping for a
different one. Over the last few years this has been my problem, I have been
stupid. I often tell Pastors and Christian Leaders to think outside the box but
have not done so myself. I have tried to do the same thing over and over again,
knowing what I am saying and offering is right and relevant but just not
getting the results I am looking for.
It all started just over a year ago, I had a trip to Malaysia
where I taught a master class on Emotional Intelligence. It was a fantastic
trip and I enjoyed doing what I was doing, it was as though it was meant to be.
This was my calling, or was it?
On my return to the UK I began to hit the same barriers of resistance
with Pastors and Christian Leaders that I had experienced over the last 7
years. Who are you? What denomination do you belong to? What makes you think
that you can tell me anything new? Who are you to tell me what I am doing is wrong? Do you pastor a church, if so how big is it? And many more questions
around this same theme. My Resume and references, qualifications and
experience were not sufficient; I have been met with polite rejection or just
ignored on the one hand to paranoia, suspicion and hostility on the other.
So what did I do to turn it around? I took a leaf out of Paul's
play book. In Acts 18: 7. Paul left the
synagogue and went next door to a Greek called Titius Justus. In other words he
moved the story line away from the Jews and took it to the gentiles. My task
was simple move 'my ministry' from the church and offer it to the secular world.
The result has been that once I shook the dust of the church off my shoes the
secular world has embraced my resume, qualifications, references and experience
with open arms and I have had some great successes.
Now, God has opened a new door in a church organisation where I can
build, using all my qualification, skill set and life experience to the
betterment of the Kingdom of God. All it took was, seven months and for me to
step into something new, think outside the box and then sit back and watch God
wake the church up.
Tim, so pleased for you. I used the same principle but was unaware of it at the time. God is good.
ReplyDeleteHi Mike, sorry just seen the comment to this blog post. I am now dealing, through a Christian Organisation, primarily with secular companies and making some interesting inroads not afforded me in the church.
