Jesus: The Mega church leader with a servant heart.

Jesus: The mega church leader with a servant heart.

A few months ago I uploaded a blog referring to Jesus as the first mega church leader. This was a little tongue in cheek dig at modern day mega church leaders and their attitudes. I would like to take up this theme again. I do this as a protest against those mega church leaders and those who think like mega church leaders. I am not here to bash anyone, but the more I hear of events at the Hillsong church in New York, the angrier I get with leaders who forget where they have come from, who they represent and who they serve.

Mega Church leaders walk around wearing the latest designer fashion, they do this partly to never grow old and always be relevant to the youth they appeal too, and also to make them trendier when appealing to the celebrities that attend their churches. They drive around in the newest SUV to make sure the status symbol is seen. They make sure the house they live in is in an upmarket suburb and that they have plenty of room to host parties for their inner circle. They make sure they hire someone to walk their dog, look after their children and security to help them feel safe. On Sundays at their mega churches they sit in the green room watching  sport on TV until it is their turn to perform.

Let me state categorically that it is not about the cloths we wear, the car we drive, nor the house we live in. Nor is it about any of the other things I have mentioned. It is about an attitude of the heart. It is about being a servant.  Jesus our prime example was "the suffering servant", He wasn't surrounded by bodyguards, when his own disciples tried to protect him he rebuked them.

Let me remind you where you have come from; You like all of us are a sinner saved by grace. Never forget this. Stay humble keep praying.

You represent the body of Christ. You are called into the ministry to serve, not to be served, I don't care how big your church is or how many people you have in your church. Do not alienate yourself from people, Jesus never did. You may have an Ephesians 4:11 ministry, but all this means is that you are called to a higher standard and should be held to a higher standard.

You are there to serve not with fancy slogans or new age mumbo jumbo, but with the gospel of Christ to a lost and dying world. You are there to bring sound biblical teaching, based on scripture not on the latest fad. Neither are you there to get more money to finance your latest Gulf Stream jet. Jesus and the early church never profited from those that followed them. If you are on $300 000 salaries shame on you.

I have been in many mega churches and in many I have enjoyed the experience. But let me state to all the mega church leaders out there; You are not the king ,you bend your knee and bow to 'The King', if you do not then God will not be mocked.

The myth of Ministry Leadership.

The myth that all leaders are leaders. Not everyone who leads in church is a leader. I think it is wrong, for Church leaders to believe that those they train up to take various ministry leadership positions, are in fact leaders in their own right. They are not. At best I would categorise these people- that many churches call 'ministry leaders' as ministry managers.                 "At one level there is nothing wrong with title inflation; it is a cheap way of recognising people who work hard and make serious contributions" Jo Owen. I am of the opinion that this title inflation undervalues both the leader and the ' ministry manager' and can often bring about confusion and mismatched expectations. Many churches have ministry training evenings for their volunteers. Many use the reason for this training is "to make a person a better leader," when in fact the only thing actually happening is that th...

The 1970's Christian Coffee Shop

I remember as a new Christian being invited into a Christian Coffee shop in the town where I grew up. It was clean and tidy, the table tops were all brightly painted in different colours,  but mainly yellow and scattered on top were a random selection of Christian tracts. Fish symbols and Christian posters proclaiming that there was but 'One Way' to heaven were everywhere. The music playing out of the stereo was The Bill Gather Trio or Dolly Parton singing Gospel. The crockery, was a mixed assortment of coffee mugs, donated by keen supporters of this outreach to the unsaved sinners and ungodly people living in the city. The coffee was a local brand heavily mixed with chicory. In all the years the Coffee Shop operated, I never saw a non-Christian go in and I never heard of a person coming to faith through having coffee there. I never really understood its purpose. Fast forward to today, when I was asked recently, to advise on helping a local community church open a c...

Playing well with others.

Today's rambling. Looking over some of my old school reports the other day and was amused at how some of the comments, that teachers made about me have shaped my life and in many respects made me who I am today. One teacher wrote that I didn’t play well with others, I was 5 at the time maybe I had an excuse. Another teacher in my high school years, the wood working teacher or wood shop teacher for my American friends wrote; “If you value your life you will keep him away from power tools and other dangerous equipment. I can’t remember why he wrote this, obviously I did something that made him fear for his life. Today as an adult I have to say that I don’t do well in committees, for most of my life I have been self- employed. I have steadfastly stayed away from power tools and other wood working equipment, basically anything that can cut something off and is a danger to life and limb. Over the last 10 years I have been looking at and teaching about Emotional Intelligence ...
