Changing Churches- Moving from mediocraty to significance.

Here is an extract from my next book;  I am looking at the idea of what is good relational leadership and how this will help us restructure or re-engineer a change process in a church. Enjoy and please feel free to comment.  The management of pastoral ministry verses the senior leadership paradox. Over the last few centuries the church has produced literally thousands upon thousands of Pastors. People who look after the flock, control the finances, organise meetings, people who control the ebb and flow of church life and solve every problem. Pastors are the people who maintain and manage the stability and consistency needed in the church. Over the last twenty years there has been a great deal of talk about leadership but little emphasis however has been put on good relational leadership.   Leadership is in fact the thing that created the organisation in the first place. Leadership establishes direction, puts the right people in the right place for the righ...

The Holy Spirit and the empirical season of change.

Revelation, Reaction and Relationship. Over the last few weeks I have been thinking about the experience of change. How people process change in their lives and how they ensure that change sticks, rather than revert to the same old same old. As a Christian leader I believe that change is seasonal. That God takes us through different seasons of our   lives and ministry cannot be in doubt. It is a time of frustration but also a time of blessing as we learn to hear and experience   what the Holy Spirit is saying to us. A new season always begins with a revelation. For Moses it was the burning bush, yet for his ancestor Joseph it was dreams that resulted at first in being thrown into a pit before being sold into slavery. In the New Testament for Saul it was the road to Damascus where Jesus made his presence known and set Paul on the road to great things. With revelation comes reaction, sometimes good, sometimes bad. Sometimes it is physical at others it is spi...

Systems, Structure or the Holy Spirit.

The Christian Leader and the Holy Spirit. I have for a while been thinking about the idea of change and the process of change when re-engineering a church. I have also been looking at the place of the Holy Spirit in that process and in the church itself. We are after all a spiritual entity, we are in the world but not of the world. Who is the Holy Spirit? According to Jesus he is our advocate our comforter. He will come and convict and convince the world of sin, righteousness and judgement. He is the one that empowers the church and when he speaks to us he does so to comfort, edify and exhort the church.  I believe when a Christian leader is taking a church through change that there is a great need not only to put in place structure and systems to ensure that the process of change can be outworked. But I also feel and believe there is a need to submit to and make room for the outworking of the Holy Spirit. As I see it there are two dangers; The danger that a ch...

GOD Wants you!!!

God wants the next generation. I had coffee this week with a senior church leader and in the course of our   amicable conversation he accused me of not understanding the dynamics of church congregations. He also said that most contemporary churches do not cater in their programmes for the 40+ age group, and that they are too focused on the youth agenda. Please forgive me if I have used this illustration before but I think it is directly linked to what I have to say below: When you have a goldfish in a goldfish bowl it needs to be fed by you on a daily basis otherwise it will die. When you have goldfish in a pond in the garden or a public park you don't have to feed them because for the most part they will find food for themselves, little insect larva or algae and maybe the occasional bread crust thrown in by a child. When it comes to Christians those that constantly need feeding never seem to grow in their faith but those that learn to feed themselves grow and ...

I am still relevant, BUT GOD......

I am still relevant, BUT GOD...... It has been 15 years since I left my homeland behind because of the fiddling and ranting and raving of a despot and dictator. I became part of a Diaspora who's heart and blood still longs for the sights and sounds and smells of Africa. BUT GOD, has had other plans and on my sojourn- first in New Zealand and now in the United Kingdom I have learnt many new things. It has been 15 years of teaching, lecturing and preaching about leadership and   Christian leadership development, values and principles. In that time I have had the great privilege to meet many great men and women of God, people who have spoken into my life and given me great insights. It has also been a time where I have seen brilliant church leadership and very poor church leadership. It has been a time where I have seen human failings and weaknesses in all manner of church leaders both successful and those who are not so successful. At times during the last 15 years ...
